So as you might know, my wife is a bit of a Comic-Con-Queen now. She's co-organised two Cardiff Comic expos, hosted panels at other conventions etc etc As a large part of this is dealing with the manga kids she wanted to get a bit of knowledge about what they are all into and as the only Manga I had was Death Note (which is BRILLIANT by the way) I grabbed the first few Naruto volumes thinking we could both read them and see what we thought. She read the first two or three chapters... Im on something like 200 It's weirdly addictive and while it's totally different in tone to Death Note both have the same weird style of storytelling where someone walking to a door can take four pages as we stop to check every reaction, every scuffed step etc etc. Reads a lot more like storyboards actually and some of the one on one fight scenes take up about the same page count as a full arc of Stickleback or something Wouldnt like all my books like this, but makes for a cool change of pace. And like I said, I cant seem to stop Also checked out the first episode of the animated version last night, slightly dogily on youtube, and enjoyed that quite a bit too.

Erm way way WAY too much. Love it, doesnt seem to patronise readers in the same way (they even show kids and characters smoking!) Just love the unadulterated feel good of the more popular ones and the sick twistedness with just some badass ideas in others. And lets face it Mechas are coooooool

Yeah, the ones I've read have weird "fuck it" attitudes
Usually the cute little kids are safe in comics but Manga guys are happy to kill and maim anyone, even the main characters you'd assume are safe

If I could make some recommendations..
Deadman wonderland: Dark, dark action series set in a seriously fucked up prison where certain inmates fight each other with blood based powers. And yes if they use their power too much they pass out from bloodloss.
Hunter X Hunter: At first glance seemingly very kiddy till you notice there is a large amount of brutality creeping in and you realise that damn this is quite hardcore.
Shingeki No Kyojin: Humanity trapped in its last outpost as human hungry giants roam. Again is dark and way more complex than it first appears.
Fist of the blue sky: epic prequel to fist of the north star set in 1930 shanghai
One Piece: Epic beyond all description. There is a reason that each volume of this sells millions of copies in its first week of release. Ok its not deep but its funny, totally badass action in an ever expanding universe. Fucking would'nt want to live without it.

I do read Manga, but less so recently (I used to read loads). For anyone who likes the Prog and Meg, I'd recommend the following titles which share certain sensibilities.
Battle Angel Alita - Over the top concepts and SciFi with mad action and violence. The first series was perfect, but the new series (Last Order) has recently trailed off into being very slow and a bit boring.
X by Clamp - You'll have to get over the style of drawing if your not used to Manga in the first place, but once you're past that it's an epic, dark and violent series about the end of the world (how could it not be).
Bokurano: Ours - Again initially looks a bit kiddy, especially as the main characters are kids but once you get passed that it's a great ride. A group of kids are basically given a huge robot to pilot and fight aliens, but each person who controls the robot die right after defeating the enemy attack. Meaning no character is save in this series.
Monster - Quite slow at times, but a great read about a surgeon who saved the life of a child who later becomes a psychopath/ serial killer in the vain of Hannibal Lecter and the surgeon goes out to find him in hopes of stopping him and clearing his own name.
MPD Psycho - About a detective hunting after serial killers the police can't handle and who himself has a multiple personality disorder, with at least one of them being a serial killer as well. Much bloodshed and violence ensues.

Tried MPD Psycho, couldnt really get into it after the first 3 or 4 so gave up. Might go back though.
At the time I switched from that to Battle Royale which was awesome. Can also recommend one called Uzumaki which is a really messed up horror one. Avoid the film though, its rubbish

Just thought of one you might enjoy though, try Gantz. Tis seriously fecked up that one.

I quite liked MPD Psycho up to 9 I think it was, where things slowed down and became a bit boring, but hopefully it will pick up again soon. I've been meaning to read Uzumaki, it's from the same guy who wrote Ring.
I completely agree, most Manga needs time to really get going, but once you're there you usually can't stop reading it.
I watched the first couple of the Gantz anime and found it very slow and stopped watching after that. Does the manga have more momentum?

I actually found reading Gantz the initial pace was really good i got to about chapter 80 then started to struggle. A mate of mine who has stuck with it loves it.
