If you like action and intrigue that spans the stars, then this is the series of books (plus audio CDs and e-books) for you.
Here is an outline for you, just in case you don't know about any of the Warhammer 40K stuff. Think Insurrection from the Megazine and that's what the Space Marines look like, a little!
Led by the Emperor’s superhuman progeny, the primarchs, the vast armies of Earth have conquered the galaxy in the Great Crusade. The Emperor’s elite warriors, the heroic and battle-hardened Space Marines, have smashed all aliens, tyrant despots and traitors into compliance. Gleaming citadels of marble and gold celebrate their many victories. Triumphs are raised on a million worlds to record their epic deeds, but such vainglory will not last…
Rebellion looms when the Primarch Horus, he who once stood by the side of the Emperor, is tempted by the Chaos gods. Horus’s defection will shake the foundations of the nascent Imperium and take it to the edge of annihilation. As the flames of war spread across the galaxy, mankind’s champions will be put to the ultimate test, as brother faces brother and the universe trembles with the beat of war.
As of today we have 22 novels in the series, not counting the above extra stuff. These are:-
Horus Rising • False Gods • Galaxy in Flames • The Flight of the Eisenstein • Fulgrim • Descent of Angels • Legion • Battle for the Abyss • Mechanicum • Tales of Heresy • Fallen Angels • A Thousand Sons • Nemesis • The First Heretic • Prospero Burns • Age of Darkness • The Outcast Dead • Deliverance Lost • Know No Fear • The Primarchs • Fear to Tread • Shadows of Treachery
I'm actually reading the last book on the above list at the moment and I've got to admit I am really enjoying the series. One or two books are a wee bit slow but then again, these delve into far reaching consequences further down the line!
Dan Abnett starts the series off with a bang and from then on in it's shit hitting the fan, as legions battle legions. It's so complicated that sometimes there are vast blue on blue conflicts, which is quite spectacular as you watch it unfold page after page!
I had never read any of this stuff before until the 2000AD novels ended and told the missus I was bored. She knew Dan from the comic shop and so looked for some of his work and gave me the first book in this series, which is by him, obviously!
I thoroughly recommend this series
