Just wondered if anyone else was buying JLD and wondered whot you thought about their take on Constantine. Now i had no problem with them plonking him in a more mainstream comic working on the theory that any more Constantine is welcome being a huge fan of the Hellblazer mags.
However in this take it really is like a rebooted Constantine thats been going on and its been busy adding to the Lore if you like. Where he got his coat, who trained him even down to Zatanna apparently being the love of his life (Kit Ryan anyone?). Am i reading the whole thing wrong? Is it supposed to be a rebooted Constantine or are they just taking too many liberties with the character.

I'm just hoping at some point the universe realigns itself and whichever moron at DC made that decision is sucked back into the pit of hell where they clearly came from and resumes whatever anal treatment was being offered.

One things this Hellblazer / Constantine change does do is make me want to pick up more of the Hellblazer trades! Not sure about DCU though... Still try to keep an open mind and all that...

Good luck getting hold of some of the hellblazer trades, im I think 2 shy of the full set and that makes me bloody lucky as some of them go for over £50 as they are out of print. You should be able to get dangerous habits though which is just class. Also Warren Ellis' small run is well worth it. Other than that they are all pretty good, Azzerellos run maybe not the best, Careys run being a favourite of mine. All his engines is a nice one shot story. The very early Delano ones are good but maybe not the place to jump in on bizarrely

Oh and as regards keeping an open mind on the new DCU constantine as my old comic book shop guy said to me when we were talking bout this
"I seriously doubt that we’ll ever see the New 52 Constantine trading angel semen for a Bible made of foreskins."
I rest my case.

DC are reprinting all the trades for Hellblazer at the moment and in a nice format as well, two trades in one (approx 300 pages).
Hellblazer is again a funny one for me, I've heard so many good things about it, but never got around to actually reading it. I'll definitely be picking up these new trades though.
I just hope DC will do the same format reprint for the Lucifer series (another series I missed somehow).

Awww I love the lucifer series. Do think it helps if you read the Sandman one that sets it up but he is such a great character that Gaiman created and the series itself is just a joy to read.
Hellblazer though for me was the cuddly go-to book for when i couldnt decide what to read I knew there would be a story in there I would just pick up and enjoy. It really is a crime they are ditching it for the kid safe version.

Yeah I read that article too, it was on Bleeding Cool as well. He's a little bit over the top and too over sentimental for my taste, but he's not wrong. Loosing Hellblazer in the bigger scheme of things is quite a loss. And it's just a matter of time till the Constantine series is cancelled and the YA market (which they seem to be targeting more and more) will dry up and lead them to publishing those titles again that made Vertigo great in the first place.
I can definitely understand DC wanting to tap into that YA market as much as possible as it's such a hot ticket at the moment, but they're missing the point if that's the only market they go for. The whole beauty of comics is that you don't have to just cater to one market.
I know they're in the business of making money and Hellblazer hasn't been selling that well for a while now, but they don't even make their money in general from the comics side as their merchandise and films are much more lucrative for them.

I've never said or argued that I'm against a kiddie safe version of the character. I just dont get why they couldnt do both. If the company was in financial trouble ok i'd forgive it. But sorry this is still a bonkers decision. And as to it being a sentimental piece I do agree but as you can maybe guess from my reaction its quite a sentimental comic to a lot of people. It was the one comic that was totally safe in my pull list.

Oh no, I absolutely agree with you, the smarter thing would've been to do both versions. That way the kiddie safe version could've worked as a gateway drug to the adult version. And depending on how it turns out I might even pick up the new series, I already liked the sound of Jeff Lemire's premise for Constantine in JLD. But for some reason DC (and Marvel to a certain degree as well), never go down the route of publishing two versions as they're afraid having two versions might confuse readers somehow (complete bollocks if you ask me).
Unfortunately I've never read Hellblazer (planning to pick up the new trades though), but even I can see it's a big loss to the comicbook industry. The whole point of Watchmen back in the day was to show comics can be for grown-ups and about more adult themes and sensibilities. But all this has translated to in most comics over the years really is just a bit more gore and sex, but all in a very plastic and clean way (not that there's anything wrong with that per se). Whereas Hellblazer clearly took these more adult themes and sensibilities and ran with them properly.

Just made a decision. It literally popped into my head for no reason. I'm not going to buy the new constantine comic. Im going to get a different vertigo title instead.
Now which one to choose......

Well there are a couple of new Vertigo titles starting soon (somewhere next year), which seem very promising.
There is: Scott Snyder & Sean Murphy - The Wake Jeff Lemire - Trillium Simon Oliver & Robbi Rodriguez- Collider
